CHAPTER 17

WE’RE UNDER HERE SOMEWHERE

The next morning was one of those.

Every busy mom gets them sometimes: the kind of morning where everything breaks in exactly the wrong direction as you’re trying to get the kid fed and packed, the spouse out the door, and your own act together.

Daniel didn’t want oatmeal, or French toast sticks, or a waffle for breakfast. I finally settled him down with leftover spaghetti and meatballs, which meant I had to come up with a new plan for his lunch.

Fortunately, he’s not in a nut-free classroom this year, so I could just slap together a peanut butter sandwich and send that.

In the middle of all of this, Michael appeared asking if I could zap his breakfast burrito for the road. I could zap something for sure.

Then Scotchie discovered if he got up on his hind legs, he could eat the heads off my roses from last night.

As I chased him away, my phone pinged. New ideas from my client who had no concept of time…or just assumed I was at her beck and call because she was paying me.

It was all enough to make a mom lie down in traffic. If she had time.

I wasn’t the only one who was having a day either.

At drop-off, Corinna was well into her description of Imani’s crying jag because her favorite sweater was in the hamper when Brian pulled up.

“Can you two make sure Zoey gets in? I’ve got to get my great-uncle to the urgent care.”

“Of course.” We weren’t trying for unison, but it happened that way.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Jimmy Stewart clawed him two days ago, and it’s not healing properly. Probably no big deal, but with someone that age…”

Corinna and I nodded.

“And you have to make him go,” she said. “My dad was the same way.”

“Yep.” Brian sighed. “I wanted him to go at the end of the day yesterday, but he wouldn’t. So I told him we’d go this morning. No arguments.”

“Did he buy in?” I asked.

“He will.”

We had no doubt as he sped down the traffic circle.

“I’d almost think we were paying for our big moment last night,” Corinna said.

“Did you enjoy it?”

“Other than the ice cream afterward, no.”

“Uh-huh. So why would we be punished?”

“Good point. Pretty interesting to see the town council at work, though.”

“No kidding. Amazing anything gets done around here.”

“Amazing they didn’t kill each other.” She shook her head. “If Mrs. Winch hadn’t dropped dead from natural causes…”

I looked at her. There was nothing unusual in her tone. Nothing to suggest she was doing anything other than enjoying an edgy joke. And maybe she was. Or maybe she was misdirecting. Two can play that. “But she did, so we don’t have to worry about anyone hauling the rest of the council off to jail.”

“Good point. Lord knows what the next batch would be.”

“It’s hard to imagine worse, but…”

“Yeah.”

“Yeah.”

The bell went off, and the stampede began.

“And we’re into the day,” I said.

“See you after pickup,” Corinna started to go, then turned back. “Thanks for getting Cherise.
